The Carleton College Art Gallery will kick-off its fall season with an exhibition showcasing fine art prints created by artists from Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, and Hawaii. Prints Around the Pacific Rim, running from September 17 to November 17, 2010, celebrates the varied method of printmakers, and highlights artistic exchange between cultures across the wide Pacific. Prints Around the Pacific Rim is also one of many fall events coinciding with the Mid America Print Council Conference, Old World/New World, taking place in the Twin Cities in mid-October.

 

    First United Church of Christ of Northfield is celebrating the 200th birthday of Frederic Chopin with a concert Saturday, Oct. 9, 7:30 p.m. performed by Horacio Nuguid of Rochester, Minn.

Children and adults sing, dance, and have fun exploring music and movement with various props and musical instruments. Each week will feature music from different parts of the world. These activities focus on listening, self expression and stretching the muscles with musical fun! Parents/guardians - please join us in class.

Recently appointed the eleventh president of Carleton College, Steven G. Poskanzer, will deliver a special convocation at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, in the Skinner Memorial Chapel on the Carleton campus. Entitled “Setting Prairie Fires,” Poskanzer’s address will highlight the experiences that have led him to his current position, providing a unique perspective with which to serve as the new president of Carleton College. Poskanzer’s presentation is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception on the campus Bald Spot.

Acclaimed Minneapolis-based Avant garde jazz trio The Bad Plus will return to the Carleton College Concert Hall for a not-to-be-missed lecture and performance on Friday, Sept. 24, 2010, beginning at 7 p.m. The appearance is part of the band’s current tour in support of their soon-to-be-released studio album, “Never Stop.” Admission to the lecture and concert is free but, because an overflow crowd is expected, this will be a ticketed event.
