Then visit the Northfield Historical Society (NHS) when it opens a new exhibit showing downtown Northfield like you've never seen it before on Thursday, Aug. 26, at 5 p.m. We have selected some rare photographs from our collection, cleaned them up to bring out the details, and enlarged them. So if you want to see some amazing photographs of downtown Northfield, come to NHS between 5 and 8 p.m. and enjoy refreshments courtesy of Just Food Co-op.
Come to the League of Women Voters' celebration of the 90th U.S. Anniversary of Women’s Right to Vote and the founding of the League! Bring the family and a blanket or lawn chair. The Northfield community will be brought back to the year 1920, with a mayoral proclamation, suffragists in costume, music of the time, and a historical perspective on Northfield during the suffragist movement.

Students grades K-5 can dribble, pass and kick their way through “Future Raider Soccer Camp” which will be held 5-6:15 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays, Sept. 8 through Oct 1. Camp is at the Spring Creek Soccer Fields.

Carleton College will celebrate the beginning of its new academic year with an opening convocation presented by distinguished alumnus, Jimmy Kolker, Carleton Class of 1970, on Monday, Sept. 13, 2010, at 3 p.m. in the College’s Skinner Memorial Chapel. Since 2007, Kolker has served as the Chief of the HIV/AIDS Section at UNICEF’s New York headquarters, providing leadership and coordination of UNICEF’s work on HIV and AIDS at the global level.
Entitled “Why Carleton Is a Good Place to Start Your International Career,” Kolker’s address will reflect on his international experiences, and how the preparation he received through a liberal arts education at Carleton helped forge the path for a career that, while still a student, did not yet exist, as diplomatic experts on AIDS were unheard of at the time he graduated 40 years ago. Kolker’s presentation is free and open to the public.

Community Services is hosting a movie night to show “Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian” at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 17, at the Northfield High School auditorium. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Concessions will be sold before and after the show but cannot be eaten in the auditorium. There is a suggested donation of $2 per person.

Cannon River Watershed Partnership’s Annual Cleanup of the Cannon and Straight Rivers - September 18, 9 a.m.—Noon
Join us for a free celebration of the season at the annual Just Food Co-op Harvest Festival! You'll be treated to tasty samples from some of your favorite local producers. We'll also have live music by some sweet local bands (Templeton, Dumbfinger, and Depot Creek, and ArtOrg will be on hand to help you make your own steamroller print. This is a great opportunity to meet and talk with area farmers and producers. The public library continues to celebrate 100 years of community building with its monthly dessert, coffee and music among the computers, books and magazines.
Free Ole Cafe cake and Blue Monday coffee is served at 7 PM. Mellow acoustic guitar music written and performed by Roger Lasley begins at 7:30 PM.

Enjoy live music, wagon rides, a silent auction, and more as you step back into the 19th century at the annual Valley Grove Country Social from 1 to 4 p.m. this Sunday, Sept. 19 at Valley Grove Church, located between Northfield and Nerstrand.
Entertainment at the social includes Hütenänny, a Northfield-based group that plays old-time dance music from the Nordic countries, and music on the historic original organ by Theo Wee, Richard Collman and Rhonda Reese. Activities also include farm animals, horse-drawn wagon rides, a silent auction including benches made from recycled floorboards of the church, old-time family activities, and prairie walks on the scenic land surrounding the church.

The Breast Care Center at Northfield Hospital & Clinics is hosting two separate events in October in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Fall is beautiful on the prairies -- asters and goldenrods are in bloom and many different grasses have fully developed seed heads. Seeds and pods of many of the earlier blooming plants are still obvious and easy to identify. Cowling Arboretum Director Nancy Braker and Arboretum Manager Matt Elbert will help you identify the late season bloomers and fill you in on the details of the prairie restoration project at Carleton College.

This exhibition takes place during the holidays to take advantage of the gift giving season. The Northfield Economic Development Authority will host a public open house on Thursday, September 23rd, from 6:00-8:30 p.m. to present the latest drafts of the Business and Industrial Park Master Plans. The open house will be held at Community Resource Bank, 1605 Heritage Drive.
At 6:15 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., the planning team will offer a brief presentation of the master planning process and the concept plans. Planners from Hoisington Koegler Group, Inc., members of the Steering Committee, and City staff will be on hand to answer questions and receive public comments.
The master plans address land use allocation, site organization, transportation issues, open space and storm water management strategies, development guidelines and phasing strategies. Recently appointed the eleventh president of Carleton College, Steven G. Poskanzer, will deliver a special convocation at 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, in the Skinner Memorial Chapel on the Carleton campus. Entitled “Setting Prairie Fires,” Poskanzer’s address will highlight the experiences that have led him to his current position, providing a unique perspective with which to serve as the new president of Carleton College. Poskanzer’s presentation is free and open to the public and will be followed by a reception on the campus Bald Spot.
Acclaimed Minneapolis-based Avant garde jazz trio The Bad Plus will return to the Carleton College Concert Hall for a not-to-be-missed lecture and performance on Friday, Sept. 24, 2010, beginning at 7 p.m. The appearance is part of the band’s current tour in support of their soon-to-be-released studio album, “Never Stop.” Admission to the lecture and concert is free but, because an overflow crowd is expected, this will be a ticketed event.

The Northfield High School Class of 1995 will hold its 15-year reunion in Northfield on Saturday, September 25, 2010. All classmates, their guests, and families are welcome to attend an informal gathering from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Odd Fellows Park. The Saturday evening event will start at the Northfield Golf Club with dinner from 6 to 9 p.m.
