The Sibley Stars 4th Grade Choir will be presenting their Spring Concert on Thursday, May 27,  7:00 pm in the Sibley Elementary School gymnasium under the direction of Mrs. Holly Fischer. The choir will be performing the world premier of "Minnesota Spring," a new choral work written by members of the choir and Emily Lund, published composer and Northfield resident. This project is made possible in cooperation with the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council, Inc. through funding from the Minnesota State Legislature.

With plans to retire at the end of this academic year, Robert A. Oden Jr., the 10th president of Carleton College, will preside over his final Honors Day Convocation on Friday, May 28at 3 p.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel. An esteemed professor of religion, Oden will deliver a keynote address entitled “Listening to Ancient Voices.” Honors Day is a celebrated annual tradition at Carleton. Taking place on the last Friday of spring term, the event formally acknowledges the achievements and service to the community made by students and faculty in the past academic year. The Honors Day Convocation is free and open to the public.

Carleton’s acclaimed Semaphore Repertory Dance Company, directed by Judith Howard and Jane Shockley, will perform its annual spring concert on Friday and Saturday, May 28 and 29, at 8:00 p.m. in the Arena Theater on the Carleton College campus. The performance will feature three pieces crafted by guest choreographer, Mathew Janczewski, artistic director at Arena Dances in Minneapolis. Janczewski’s choreography emphasizes non-narrative movement and Semaphore student director and senior Annie Rees (Columbia, Mo.) notes, “In the pieces he has choreographed for us, audiences will see how crisp and clean the lines he creates with movements are.” This event is free and open to the public.

The Northfield VFW has planned a Memorial Day service beginning at 9 a.m. in Riverside Lions Park. The event honors all veterans, especially those who passed away in the last year.  The VFW also suggests that in honor of Memorial Day, citizens can stop in to the VFW building and buy a poppy, the proceeds of which will support disabled veterans and their families.

The Carleton College African Drum Ensemblewill perform their annual spring concert on Tuesday, June 1 at 4 p.m. in the Sayles-Hill Great Space. The concert will feature religious ritual and festive music from the African nation of Ghana, performed under the direction of Carleton’s senior lecturer in percussion, Jay Johnson. Students from three of Carleton’s Afro-Cuban groups will also perform. This always-popular performance is free and open to the public.

The Northfield Community Band is looking for instrumentalists for their 2010 summer series.

Rehearsals are 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesdays, June 9, 16, 23, 30 and July 7 in the Northfield High School band room. Performances are 6 p.m. on June 17; and 7 p.m. on June 24, July 1 and 8. All performances are at Bridge Square. There is a $5 participation fee to be paid on the first night of rehearsal.

Anyone interested in performing in the band may simply show up at rehearsal. E-mail Paul Beck at Paul.Beck@nfld.k12.mn.us or visit the band online for more information.

Carleton College will award the Bachelor of Arts degree to 496 graduating seniors at the 136th annual commencement ceremony on Saturday, June 12, at 9:30 a.m. on the Bald Spot, the lawn west of Hulings Hall on the Carleton campus. In the event of severe weather, commencement will be held indoors at the Recreation Center. Seating is available to accommodate all guests, whether outdoors or indoors, and no tickets are required.

Since 1978, Carleton has enjoyed the tradition of asking members of the senior class to select two classmates to make remarks at the ceremony. This year, Irene Koplinka-Loehr, a studio art major from Ithaca, N.Y., has been selected to present her speech entitled “An Average Carl.” The second speaker will be Salomone Baquis, a history major from Longmeadow, Mass., whose speech is titled “Happy Birthday, Bea White.”

The Main Street Moravian Church is hosting its Annual Spaghetti Dinner Extravaganza on Monday June 14h at 5:30 pm.   The menu will include, spaghetti, marinara, homemade meatballs, garlic bread, ice cream and beverages.  Table service by youth, music and a fun atmosphere!  A raffle will be held with many prizes from Division Street businesses, including gift certificates and specialty items.  The cost of the dinner is $7 or $25 for a family of four or more.  The raffle tickets are $1.  Tickets can be purchased at the door.  Funds raised are for our Youth Camp Scholarships.   For more information please call Pastor Amy at 645-7566.

Carleton College’s ACT —Acting in the Community Together—Center will hold its popular annual Lighten Up! Garage Sale from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, June 17 and 18, in the West Gym on the Carleton campus.

 

As in previous years, all profits from the sale will be split between the Northfield Union of Youth (The Key), Northfield Special Olympics, and Project Friendship.  Through the collaborative efforts of the ACT Center, these three local organizations and community volunteers, the Lighten Up! Garage Sale has been a highly successful fundraiser that provides essential funds for these Northfield non-profits and champions “green” living. Last year, the garage sale featured 75,000+ items and raised over $23,000.

We are lucky to have the staff of Midwest Food Connection presenting Healthy Grains of Wheat, a lesson for kids on the differences between white and whole-wheat products, the importance of wheat in our state's history, and its impact on our diets.  Participants will get a chance to grind wheat and complete an art project to help synthesize the information they have learned.

Midsommar in Way ParkCelebrate Scandinavian midsommar in Way Park on the evening of Sunday, June 20. Informal picnicking, wreath making and other family-friendly activities begin at 5 p.m. Festivities will include a midsommar processional, followed by raising of the maistang (maypole), songs and dances, games, and more. Live Nordic music will be provided by Hütenänny and friends. In case of rain, the celebration will be held at St. John's Lutheran Church.
