It's not part of the official ArtSwirl events, but after you're done Art Crawling on Saturday night, you might want to head on over to the Archer House's Tavern Lounge, where Matt Arthur and the Bratlanders, Northfield's favorite foot-stomping, Johnny Cash-invoking, protest singing, Leadbelly-channeling country-folk-roots-rockers will present their strangely-compelling musical revue.

If the weather cooperates, which you know it will, you'll find us out on the riverside deck, starting around 8:30 p.m.

Community members (in small groups) are invited to “speed date” the Mayoral candidates—get to know them, raise some issues, and ask questions. The format is highly unique and the idea of some of Northfield’s youth. We will hold this event at The Grand Event Center, and it should be a fun and festive atmosphere for the entire community.

Between Earth and Sky

On Sunday, August 10, at 3pm the large sculpture by Mac Gimse called "Between Earth and Sky" will be unveiled at the Lampe Law Group offices at 105 East Fifth Street in Northfield. Facilitated by the local group ArtOrg, the outdoor dedication ceremony will celebrate this important work with music, poetry and stories from Mac's former students and colleagues. Speakers will include Pat Quade, Glenn Switzer, Carl Arnold and some surprise quests. Music will be provided by Peter Diggens. The sculpture will be placed in Northfield for the next year, until which time it is permanently sited at the Dundas trailhead of the Northfield to Dundas ARTrail. There is information about the ARTrail here, and a photoset of other abundant sculpture in the area here. This activity is part of this year's Art Swirl festival.

The Cat, the Donkey and the Elephant went to sea...

ArtOrg has been invited to add another stop to the "1000 Print Summer" project: the nonpartisan expression of democracy called The UnConvention. The UnConvention is just one of the large gatherings planned around the Republican Nation Convention to he held in St. Paul next week. Find out more from the UnConvention website and an article from last week's New York Times. It is likely that the magical 1000 print goal will be surpassed sometime during our Monday, Sept. 1 and Tuesday, Sept. 2 presence! We will be there from 11am to 10pm each day, and are located at Peavey Plaza, 1111 Nicollet Mall, Minneapolis (right in front of Orchestra Hall, and across from Brit's Pub and Vincent's). Join us to express your inner politics!

night birdsIs there a better time of the year than the Defeat of Jesse James Days? For me, that’s not even a question. Not only can I play bingo, watch raid re-enactments, and ride the rides, DJJD is my version of Thanksgiving — stretched over a long weekend. You have no idea how much perfectly edible, good-and-greasy food ends up in those garbage bins!

This year, though, I’m planning a feast break. That’s because Thomas Maltman, author of the critically acclaimed The Night Birds, will appear at River City Books from 2 to 4 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 6, to sign copies and talk with readers. I hope you’ll also stop by the store during this free event.

matt posterCelebrate the Defeat of Jesse James Days with Northfield's second-favorite band of outlaws, Matt Arthur and the Bratlanders!

This Saturday, September 6th, Matt and the Brats will make their fourth annual DJJD-weekend appearance outdoors (weather permitting) on the big stage behind the Contented Cow.

What can you expect? Hollering, foot-stomping, and a wee bit of yodeling, some jangling and twanging, the sweet scream of an electric guitar, and the mesmerizing drone of an accordion.

Find out more about the man whose voice has been compared to Johnny Cash, Nick Cave, Jim Morrison, Boxcar Willie, Roy Clark, and Tom Jones at mattarthur.net.
