Celebrate Norwegian Constitution Day at the annual St. Olaf Syttende Mai breakfast on Saturday, May 17, from 7 to 9 a.m. in the Kings Dining Room. The event will be hosted by the St. Olaf College Norwegian Department and Norwegian House.
The traditional Norwegian breakfast will feature a variety of hot and cold delicacies. The menu will include a variety of breads and crackers; cheeses, such as goat cheese and Jarlsberg; meats and fish, such as sardines, pickled herring and anchovies; dessert waffles; pastries and almond cake; and fresh fruit.

Author Alice Tanghe, will discuss and sign copies of her book, The Minnesota Homegrown Cookbook on Saturday, May 17 at Just Food Co-op in Northfield at 11:00 am. Preregistration is recommended for this free event by calling 507-650-0106 or talking with a cashier at the Co-op.
Alice will discuss some of the 100 recipes from 30 of Minnesota’s outstanding restaurants with a special commitment to locally grown, organic, sustainable cookery that are featured in the book. Mixing the familiar comfort food of Minnesota’s roots in the culture of Northern Europe with the fine new flavors of world cuisine, the book presents a travel guide through Minnesota, with illustrated profiles of each restaurant, chef, and uniquely appetizing locale.
ArtOrg will be in the large California Building Gallery for this year's Art-A-Whirl. Art-A-Whirl takes place this weekend on Friday from 5 to 10pm, Saturday from noon to 8pm, and Sunday from noon to 5pm. If you have never experienced this you won't be disappointed--invite some friends, grab some dinner, and see some great art! The California Building is located here, and we will be in the main gallery of the building on the first floor (2205 California Street NE, Minneapolis, MN 55418). We will be showcasing many of our future and past activities including the 1000 Print Summer and a sneak-peak of ten of the The Twenty Views of Dundas. Here is a photoset of that gallery which we used in December of 2006 when our Day of the Dead Steamroller Print project exhibit moved there after a successful run in Northfield.

The Northfield Arts Guild Dance Studio presents their Annual Spring Dance Recital. The recital will feature dances from all classes, including Creative Dance, Ballet, Modern, Tap, Jazz, Irish Step and Mexican Folkloric. The performance will take place on March 17th at 3:00pm at the Northfield Middle School. Tickets will be available at the door and are $8 for adults and $5 for students. Northfield's Main Street Moravian Church is offering a free showing of the feature-length film “Call Me Malcolm” on Tuesday May 20 at 7 pm. The film is part of a LGBT Bible Study being offered and is open to the public. The film is about a person’s transgender journey from female to male. The film begins with Malcolm’s final year of seminary. He is unrecognized as “Malcolm” by his family and uncertain about his future. Malcolm meets a variety of people on his journey, a journey which ends with greater possibilities for his life than he could have imagined. Malcolm shares his reflections with candor, eloquence and compassion.
On the evening of May 22, we intend to create a visually powerful and inspiring statement about the strength of individual survivors and the power of community. There will be music to enjoy and opportunities for reflection. Please come to Bridge Square, walk through the luminaries, and pay tribute to survivors of domestic/sexual violence throughout Rice County.
HOPE Center provides advocacy services and other forms of support to victims of domestic and sexual violence through healing, outreach, prevention and education.
Northfield School of Arts and Technology (ARTECH Charter School) will be holding four bike rides this Saturday to raise money for the school's solar project.
Riders can choose between 8, 20, 35, and 65 mile routes through Northfield, Dennison, Nerstrand, and Wanamingo (depending on the ride). All proceeds will go toward the purchase of the school's two kilowatt solar system. Riders can register online or on the morning of the Bike-a-thon (for a cost of $10). Start times are 7-9 am for the 35- and 65-mile rides and 7-10 am for the 8- and 20-mile rides. Afterward, there will be a picnic held from 11 am-1 pm.

The Northfield Public Library is hosting a series of planning meetings at St. John's Lutheran Church Tuesday, May 13, May 27 and June 10, from 7-9 p.m. to answer an important question: Can the public library be expanded on its present site to serve the community for the next 20 years?
Topics for the three meetings are:

ServiceMaster South Metro, Faribault and Owatonna will be holding a Continuing Education Class on Fire, Smoke and Odor Mitigation on Wednesday May 28, 2008 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. The registration fee is $25.00 and a lunch is also provided.
Come and explore the chemistry of fire and the effects of smoke, chemical vapors and acidic gases produced by fire on various structural building components and household contents, even during short periods of time. This course identifies items in a property that are at risk and how emergency corrosion mitigation can prevent or minimize further damage. Also, odor mitigation methods such as ozone and air cleaning are explained.
This is class has been approved by the Minnesota Commissioner of Commerce for three hours of insurance continuing education. Insurance Agents and Adjuster who are in need of continuing education are encouraged to register.
Cocoa Bean will be holding an Hawaiian Shaved Ice fundraiser this Saturday, May 31st from 12-5 pm at their location downtown (515 Division Street South). Northfield Montessori is the benefactor of this event and will receive 50 cents from each item sold to be used to start a children's vegetable garden on their preschool playground. Come enjoy a beautiful stroll downtown with an Hawaiian Shaved Ice and give Northfield Montessori children the excitement of watching their hard work blossom.

Normally I'd suggest meeting on the patio, but I don't think we'll get patio weather on Thursday. Look for the people wearing nametags.
Our standard poodle play group meets monthly the first Saturday of the month from 9 to about 9:45. We have at least nine standard poodles in town, and some hard core members who have even met in snow on Jan. 1 (when it used to be at Memorial Park). We usually have from 3-9 standards there, who are really enjoying themselves. Of course, being the town dog park, they are also playing with all the other dogs, but they seem to recognize each other as the same delightful breed. We have been meeting for three years. If you have or want a standard poodle come join us this Saturday June 7!

Northfield Dance Academy presents it's Spring Recital, "Dreams" at the Northfield Middle School on Saturday, June 7th at 2pm.
The show includes performances in tap, jazz, ballet, contemporary, hip hop, and character.

I've been working at making a music video. Actually, I'm still in the set-up stage; I've borrowed a cute little camcorder, (thanks Danny!), the microphones are in place, the lighting is happening, and a large hank of black velour is on order for the backdrop, it should arrive this week. I'll let you all know when there's something to check out on YouTube! No doubt I'll soon set a new record for number of "hits." But I'm not there yet and if you just can't wait, you can catch me this Saturday at The Tavern Lounge, 8pm to 12...

Main Street Moravian Youth will be having a Spaghetti Dinner and Raffle on Monday, June 9, 5:30-7:30 pm. The cost for the dinner is $8 and will include spaghetti, salad, garlic bread, beverage and a dessert. There will also be a raffle with many prizes including gift certificates from area businesses. On Thursday, June 12, there will be a charity fund-raiser for Northfield fifth-grader Logan Olivero at Papa Murphy’s in Northfield. Papa Murphy’s will donate 50% of all proceeds from June 12, to the Olivero family. There is also the opportunity to purchase peel-a-deal cards at the store. They are a $25 value for $5 and can be picked up any day at the Northfield Papa Murphy’s. All proceeds from the peel-a-deal cards go directly to the Olivero family.
If you cannot make it to the Northfield location, and one of our other locations (Eagan or West St Paul) would be more convenient, just bring in this message on June 12 to that store and we will donate 50% of your purchase. To help out with operations that day, phoning in your order by Wednesday, June 11 would be greatly appreciated.

Please mark this date on your calendars. Friends of Way Park are organizing a day of simultaneous garage sales, with each host declaring a percentage of the proceeds to benefit the park. Maps showing sites of the sales will be available at the North end of the Park, near St. Olaf Avenue, from 8:30 on, throughout the day.

The Northfield Gymnastics Club is sponsoring a golf tournament again this year as the club’s major fundraising event.
The tournament will be held at the Northfield Country Club beginning at 1:00pm on June 16th. Cost per individual is $100 and includes golf, cart and dinner. Or if you can only join us for dinner, the cost is $25 per person. There will also be an auction, door prizes and personal goodie bags for golfers.
