Printmakers Jan Vicar and Kristyna Pojerova did not travel 4500 miles just to give an ordinary art exhibit! On Sunday April 13, from 3 pm to 9 pm, the ArtOrg gallery exhibit called "Czech Printmaking 2008" will open. The exhibit will feature work from eight contemporary printmakers from the Czech Republic, and the addition of about 20 artists from the University of Minnesota Printmaking Collaborative called "The Bohemian Press". The 14 men of the choir are professional singers and the 25 boys attend the Saint Thomas Choir School, the only church-affiliated residential choir school in the United States and one of only four such schools remaining in the world. Toxic substances arising from technological developments have significantly impacted our world during the past century. As part of the 10th annual Honors Day Science Symposium this Friday, May 2, three environmental experts from across the country will come together at St. Olaf College to consider what it means to thrive in a "toxic" world. Their lectures will be streamed online. All Science Symposium events are free and open to the public. Each of the three experts will examine the impacts of toxic waste from a different perspective. Warren P. Porter, professor of zoology and environmental toxology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will kick off the symposium by addressing the health effects of pesticides. Porter's research focuses on how environmental contaminants affect the nervous, endocrine and immune systems, as well as developmental processes. His lecture will begin at 2:15 p.m. Friday. The Northfield High School Theater presents “Holiday” by Philip M. Barry. This rarely produced and beautifully written piece takes place in 1927 in the home of a wealthy bank baron. Within the confines of this posh home, the characters explore the themes of love, success and happiness. Performances take place in the High School Auditorium and are on May 2nd, 3rd and 9th and 10th at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students. Journalist and former financial analyst Edward Hadas is convinced that the underlying principles of modern economic theory -- that all people are essentially selfish and materialistic -- are an incomplete version of human anthropology that leads to an incomplete economic theory. He'll discuss this little explored line of thinking during a lecture at St. Olaf College Monday, April 14, titled "Human Goods, Economic Evils: A Moral Approach to the Dismal Science."
As part of his tour through the Midwest, Norwegian Ambassador to the United States Wegger Strommen will visit St. Olaf College April 15-16.
The Arianna String Quartet, one of America's finest chamber ensembles, will perform at St. Olaf College on Friday, April 18. The performance will begin at 8:15 p.m. in Urness Recital Hall, Christiansen Hall of Music. It is free and open to the public. 
The St. Olaf Band will perform its annual Spring Concert on Saturday, April 19, under the baton of guest conductor Russell Pesola '61. The concert, in Boe Memorial Chapel at 7:30 p.m., is free and open to the public. It also will be streamed live and archived online.
St. Olaf College is presenting the Andrew Carter Festival Sunday, April 20, at 3:30 p.m. in Boe Memorial Chapel. The concert will feature the St. Olaf Orchestra along with the St. Olaf Choir, St. Olaf Chapel Choir and St. Olaf Cantorei choral ensembles. The performance also will include St. Olaf faculty members John Ferguson and Catherine Rodland '87 on organ, Martin Hodel on trumpet and soprano Tracey Gorman '93.

St. Olaf College will honor French computer scientist Jean-Marie Laborde with an honorary degree during a convocation ceremony Thursday, April 24, at 11 a.m. in Boe Memorial Chapel. Laborde also will present a lecture on dynamic geometry Tuesday, April 22, at 1:30 p.m. in room 282 of the Science Center.
Minnesota author Marya Hornbacher will read and discuss her new book, Madness: a Bipolar Life, at St. Olaf College Wednesday, April 30, at 7 p.m. in the Kings' Dining Room of Buntrock Commons. Following the discussion she also will be available for a book signing.
