A concert performed by the St. Olaf Clarinet Choir, St. Olaf Youth Clarinet Ensemble and St. Olaf Virtuosi Chamber Winds. The concert will be April 8, at 7 PM in Boe Chapel. The last two are new ensembles that Dr. Jun Qian has created and conducted since the fall of 2007. The members of the youth ensemble are high school students from many high schools in the area. The members of the chamber winds are selected through behind-screen auditions and the recommendations of their teachers from the music department. The goal for the group is to explore classical repertoires written for eight to 13 wind players. The program will consist of classical clarinet choir music and Mozart's "Serenade for Woodwinds and horns, K.375." | ||

Tom Swift, author of Chief Bender's Burden, will read from and discuss his book Thursday, April 10, 7:00 pm at Monkey See, Monkey Read (425 Division St in Northfield, MN). Afterward, Tom will sign books and answer questions. Refreshments will be served.
Library Journal recently gave Tom's book a starred review.
I am currently reading Chief Bender's Burden. I highly recommend this book. Tom's writing style makes this book a great read. The story is engaging and the game sequences are very exciting. Printmakers Jan Vicar and Kristyna Pojerova did not travel 4500 miles just to give an ordinary art exhibit! On Sunday April 13, from 3 pm to 9 pm, the ArtOrg gallery exhibit called "Czech Printmaking 2008" will open. The exhibit will feature work from eight contemporary printmakers from the Czech Republic, and the addition of about 20 artists from the University of Minnesota Printmaking Collaborative called "The Bohemian Press". A number of Northfield organizations, along with other national, state and community groups, are joining forces to highlight the importance of advance healthcare decision-making — an effort that has culminated in the formal designation of April 16 as National Healthcare Decisions Day . The main event of the day will include a presentation and panel discussion about advance care planning and advance directives (in accordance with Minnesota state laws) from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Northfield Public Library, followed by free consultations until 5 p.m. Panelists who will discuss advance care planning and advance directives include a local social worker, a nurse practitioner, a family member, a chaplain, an attorney and a physician. “Chicago Cubs” is an exploration of the life and times of one of the most recognizable franchises in professional sports. Pairing historical black-and-white images with photographs of the modern game, the book celebrates more than a century of ups and (mostly) downs in the history of a team known for its diehard fans. The 14 men of the choir are professional singers and the 25 boys attend the Saint Thomas Choir School, the only church-affiliated residential choir school in the United States and one of only four such schools remaining in the world. Friday will feature plays written by many Northfield youth, and Saturday will see plays from adult playwrights from as far away as some place called Mankato, wherever that is. Northfield Relaxed Homeschoolers Join us for informal weekly gatherings this summer at Oddfellows Park (Forest Avenue and Lincoln Street) on Thursdays between noon and 3 pm. This is a secular support group for unschoolers and relaxed homeschoolers in and around Northfield. We are open to families with children of all ages. Toxic substances arising from technological developments have significantly impacted our world during the past century. As part of the 10th annual Honors Day Science Symposium this Friday, May 2, three environmental experts from across the country will come together at St. Olaf College to consider what it means to thrive in a "toxic" world. Their lectures will be streamed online. All Science Symposium events are free and open to the public. Each of the three experts will examine the impacts of toxic waste from a different perspective. Warren P. Porter, professor of zoology and environmental toxology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will kick off the symposium by addressing the health effects of pesticides. Porter's research focuses on how environmental contaminants affect the nervous, endocrine and immune systems, as well as developmental processes. His lecture will begin at 2:15 p.m. Friday. The Northfield High School Theater presents “Holiday” by Philip M. Barry. This rarely produced and beautifully written piece takes place in 1927 in the home of a wealthy bank baron. Within the confines of this posh home, the characters explore the themes of love, success and happiness. Performances take place in the High School Auditorium and are on May 2nd, 3rd and 9th and 10th at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students. The St. Olaf College Dance Department will present its annual Veselica Spring Concert April 11-13, featuring dances from the Czech Republic, England, Costa Rica, India, Indonesia, Mongolia, Scotland, Uzbekistan and the Transylvanian region of Romania. 
Journalist and former financial analyst Edward Hadas is convinced that the underlying principles of modern economic theory -- that all people are essentially selfish and materialistic -- are an incomplete version of human anthropology that leads to an incomplete economic theory. He'll discuss this little explored line of thinking during a lecture at St. Olaf College Monday, April 14, titled "Human Goods, Economic Evils: A Moral Approach to the Dismal Science."
As part of his tour through the Midwest, Norwegian Ambassador to the United States Wegger Strommen will visit St. Olaf College April 15-16.
The Arianna String Quartet, one of America's finest chamber ensembles, will perform at St. Olaf College on Friday, April 18. The performance will begin at 8:15 p.m. in Urness Recital Hall, Christiansen Hall of Music. It is free and open to the public. 
The St. Olaf Band will perform its annual Spring Concert on Saturday, April 19, under the baton of guest conductor Russell Pesola '61. The concert, in Boe Memorial Chapel at 7:30 p.m., is free and open to the public. It also will be streamed live and archived online.
St. Olaf College is presenting the Andrew Carter Festival Sunday, April 20, at 3:30 p.m. in Boe Memorial Chapel. The concert will feature the St. Olaf Orchestra along with the St. Olaf Choir, St. Olaf Chapel Choir and St. Olaf Cantorei choral ensembles. The performance also will include St. Olaf faculty members John Ferguson and Catherine Rodland '87 on organ, Martin Hodel on trumpet and soprano Tracey Gorman '93.

The Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys, a choral ensemble from New York that is considered one of the finest in the world, will perform at St. Olaf College Tuesday, April 22.
St. Olaf College will honor French computer scientist Jean-Marie Laborde with an honorary degree during a convocation ceremony Thursday, April 24, at 11 a.m. in Boe Memorial Chapel. Laborde also will present a lecture on dynamic geometry Tuesday, April 22, at 1:30 p.m. in room 282 of the Science Center.









Minnesota author Marya Hornbacher will read and discuss her new book, Madness: a Bipolar Life, at St. Olaf College Wednesday, April 30, at 7 p.m. in the Kings' Dining Room of Buntrock Commons. Following the discussion she also will be available for a book signing.

St. Olaf Professor of Sociology Samiha Sidhom Peterson will deliver the address during this year's Honors Day celebration Friday, May 2, beginning at 10:10 a.m. in Boe Memorial Chapel. The event recognizes St. Olaf students who have a cumulative grade point average of 3.3 or above (on a 4.0 scale), students receiving special honors and senior students who are members of honor societies.
