Matt Arthur Yes, yes, we're all ready for spring to finally arrive, but the real question is: are you ready to rock?

Matt Arthur and the Bratlanders are raring to heat things up a bit with an April 5 appearance at the Tavern Lounge in beautiful downtown Northfield. After a historic, groundhog-defeating performance at the Cow in February, we're planning to unleash a batch of new tunes into our repertoire of original foot-stompin' protest songs, hollerin' gospel blues, and classic covers from folks like Johnny Cash, Leadbelly, Blind Lemon Jefferson and Hank Williams.

Can't wait that long? Check out a YouTube video featuring some highlights from our last Tavern appearance.

Tom Swift, author of Chief Bender's Burden, will read from and discuss his book Thursday, April 10, 7:00 pm at Monkey See, Monkey Read (425 Division St in Northfield, MN). Afterward, Tom will sign books and answer questions. Refreshments will be served.

Library Journal recently gave Tom's book a starred review.

"Signal thanks to journalist Swift for this authoritative biography of Charles Albert Bender, the early 20th-century pitcher who managed to shine in both the big leagues and in life while confronting poverty and racism."

I am currently reading Chief Bender's Burden. I highly recommend this book. Tom's writing style makes this book a great read. The story is engaging and the game sequences are very exciting. Tom has recreated many of the games Bender pitched for the Philadelphia Athletics.

The book is currently 20% off the cover price.

chicago cubsWe may have had a lousy start to spring, but baseball season continues at my favorite local book haunt. That’s because Steve Johnson, author of Chicago Cubs Yesterday & Today, will appear at River City Books at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 22, for a discussion and book signing.

“Chicago Cubs” is an exploration of the life and times of one of the most recognizable franchises in professional sports. Pairing historical black-and-white images with photographs of the modern game, the book celebrates more than a century of ups and (mostly) downs in the history of a team known for its diehard fans.

The Saint Thomas Choir of Men and Boys, a choral ensemble from New York that is considered one of the finest in the world, will perform at St. Olaf College Tuesday, April 22.

The performance will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Boe Memorial Chapel. The 14 men of the choir are professional singers and the 25 boys attend the Saint Thomas Choir School, the only church-affiliated residential choir school in the United States and one of only four such schools remaining in the world. The choir school offers extensive musical training for boys in grades three through eight. Members include John Carson, 12, son of St. Olaf faculty member Catherine Rodland '87.

garbage posterJoin Just Food Co-op for a free showing of the unique documentary Garbage! The Revolution Starts at Home (rated G).

"Garbage! The Revolution Starts at Home," is a new feature length documentary by filmmaker Andrew Nisker. It candidly portrays the threat to our environment as the Mcdonald family tracks their waste output for three months. As they discover where their garbage goes and at what cost to the environment. The Mcdonald household engages the audience with an open-door reality-check. It includes meticulous tracking of consumption and waste, right down to the children's lunchboxes, that results in not only candid comments, but also some rather enlightening and even humorous moments.

buckthorn removal crewAlong with other members of the Northfield Garden Club, I will be leading a group of volunteers in removing buckthorn from Hauberg Woods city park on Saturday, April 26, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Left unchecked, buckthorn will take over the forest and displace native trees and wildlife.  Hauberg Woods is located at the corner of Lockwood Drive and Thye Parkway on the north edge of Northfield. It is a natural park with forest and wetland.

Our group has been working on this project for three years and we have cleared about two or three acres thus far. In order to keep buckthorn out of the twenty or so acres of wooded area, we will need our efforts to grow—hopefully faster than the buckthorn.

I CantantiThe I Cantanti Chamber Choir presents their 20th Anniversary Concert at 7:30 p.m. this Sunday, April 27 in the Northfield Middle School auditorium. Admission to the concert is free, but donations will be appreciated.

The ensemble was founded in 1988 to give adult singers in the Northfield area the opportunity to perform with a first-rate, auditioned choral ensemble.
