It will be held on Friday, February 1, 2008 from 5-9 pm at the Community Resource Bank on Hwy 3 in Northfield. This event is called the ManZone and it is for men—and the women who love them. The education part of the edutainment event, hosted by the Community Resource Bank, will include health screenings and information about heart health, prostate health, spinal health, dental health, sexual health, financial health, smoking cessation, sleep apnea, bulging waistlines and raising healthy boys and much, much more. more info (event) Wapsi, Singing Saw and Stage Painting! The Wapsipinicon, lead by frontman Shawn Neary, will headline the concert that runs from 7:00 to 11:00 pm this Friday at the Upstairs of the J. Grundy's Reub 'N' Stein. Dreamland Faces will open the show slowly with an accordion and singing saw duo. That's the rallying cry of the organizers of Northfield's first annual "Defeat of Groundhog Day" celebration, which takes place Friday, February 1. No longer content to have the length of our longest season determined by an oversized rat, one local band is taking a stand on the eve of the controversial American holiday known as Groundhog Day. Matt Arthur and the Bratlanders will put their musical muscle behind an effort to prevent the rotund rodent from making its annual February 2nd prediction as to whether or not another six weeks of winter is in store. more info
02 / 2 (event) YMCA to host first Daddy Daughter Dance Feb. 2 Start: 6:00 pm End: 9:00 pm There isn’t a dad around who doesn’t think of his daughter as his little sweetheart. And now there’s a fun way for fathers to celebrate that special relationship. The Northfield Area Family YMCA is hosting its first Daddy Daughter Dance, from 6-9 p.m. Saturday, February 2, at the Armory. The evening will include dancing, dance lessons, refreshments, pictures, door prizes and a chance to learn more about other YMCA activities and programs throughout the year. Admission is $20 per couple, with a $5 charge for each additional child, for Y members. Non-members pay $26 per couple and $8 for each additional child. Participants are encouraged to make reservations online at www.northfieldymca.org. 02 / 3 (event) Politics and a Pint (3 Feb 2008) - Pick your poison (candidate) Start: 6:00 pm End: 8:00 pm With the party caucuses coming this Tuesday (5th Feb), we ought to firm up our thoughts on the question of whom to support at those caucuses. Politics and a Pint at the Contented Cow will be visiting the MPR Select a Candidate website, answering the questions from the viewpoint of the Republicans and the Democrats (played by volunteers in the audience, with the vocal support of their supporting caucuses). We may even play a neutral party picking the single best consensus answer (how willing to work together is Northfield?). more info

The meeting will be held from 7:30-9:00 p.m. in room SS106 of the Northfield Community Resource Center (1651 Jefferson Parkway). The meeting is open to those of all ages and tennis ability levels. The primary focus of the meeting will be to discuss the Northfield Tennis Association’s main activities in 2008 and to gear up for spring/summer tennis efforts. Rep. David Bly will host the discussion. Senator John Marty, an author of the proposal said, "Our legislative proposals are designed to put us on a path toward guaranteed health care that can't be taken away." Griffith is most famous," says Diana Postlethwaite, who currently holds the Boldt Chair for the Humanities at St. Olaf, "The Birth of a Nation (1915) and Intolerance (1916), are grand epic symphonies of images and emotions, Broken Blossoms (1919) is a lyric piece of chamber music." Broken Blossoms (90 minutes, starring Lillian Gish, at left), the second film of the St. Olaf Classic American Film Festival, will be shown Monday, Feb. 18, in Viking Theater of Buntrock Commons. 02 / 20 (event) Lunar Eclipse Wed. evening Feb 20: View at home naked eye, or Carleton College Goodsell Observatory if clear Start: 8:00 pm End: 10:30 pm A lunar eclipse will turn the Moon red Wednesday night, Feb. 20. The event, which occurs when the Moon enters the Earth's shadow, is easily visible to the naked eye. Carleton College's Goodsell Observatory will also open its telescopes for views of the eclipse from 8-10:30 PM. The partial phase begins at 7:43; and totality is from 9:01 to 9:51. Dress warmly as the telescope domes are not heated! The open house will be cancelled if it is cloudy. Regular open houses are also held the first Friday of each month (except July 4, 2008), with the schedule posted on at http://go.carleton.edu/83. 02 / 28 (event) Carleton to Hold Community Open House on Residence Hall Project Start: 6:00 pm End: 7:15 pm The Carleton College Advisory Council on Community Relations will host a community open house on Thursday, February 28 from 6-7:15 p.m. in Carleton’s Alumni Guest House meeting room to provide an update on the College’s plans to construct a residence hall on the east side of campus. The public is invited to attend. Since its last public meeting in December, the College has prepared final plans for the project to present to the City of Northfield for approval. There have been some changes to the plan since the last public meeting following Carleton’s Board of Trustees meeting on campus earlier this month. This is a chance for the community to provide the College with additional feedback on the project. Galston will discuss his book, Liberal Pluralism: The Implications of Value Pluralism for Political Theory and Practice, with specific attention paid to questions of civic engagement.
