Tony Award-winning Scenic Designer John Arnone to Speak at Carleton

Tony Award-winning scenic designer John Arnone, who designed the set for the Carleton Players’ upcoming production of “The House of the Seven Gables,” will host a special design forum featuring his work for stage, film and television on Wednesday, Feb. 18 at 4 p.m. in Leighton Hall, room 304.

 

A celebrated set designer, Arnone has worked on shows both on and off Broadway, and with every artistic director in major repertory theaters across the United States. Additionally, he has designed for both television and movies. Arnone has been designing sets since 1976, when he began his distinguished career with Jack Heifner’s “Vanities.” In 1993, Arnone received the Tony Award for his work on “The Who’s Tommy,” which ran successfully on Broadway and then toured the United States, the UK and Europe, with productions in Japan and Australia. In addition to the Tony Award for his set designs for “The Who’s Tommy,” Arnone also won The Drama Critics Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award, The Los Angeles Critics Award, Canada’s Dora Mayor Moore Award and an Olivier nomination. Arnone has also collaborated with an impressive list of artists, including Edward Albee, Matthew Broderick, Arthur Miller, Penn and Teller and Sigourney Weaver.

 

Arnone’s appearance is in conjunction with Carleton’s upcoming presentation of Nathaniel Hawthorne’s American classic “The House of the Seven Gables.” Performances are nightly at 8 p.m. in the Arena Theater on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 20-21 and 27-28. Carleton’s adaptation of “The House of the Seven Gables” celebrates the College’s 60-year theatrical history, reflecting the institution’s ongoing commitment to the Arts. The specially commissioned original adaptation was written by acclaimed playwright Barbara Field and features original music by composer Hiram Titus, set design by Arnone, and direction by Carleton professor Ruth Weiner.
