Tippecanoe and Tyler Too: a new historical musical comedy
Submitted by Rachel Haider on Mon, 08/18/2014 - 10:45pm
Political races are full of intriguing characters who envelope our world through advertising. Political ads seem to be never-ending. But when did this all begin and who was involved?
The new family-friendly, high-energy musical comedy, Tippecanoe and Tyler Too, answers that question in an intriguing and entertaining way. The story, (which plays Sept 4-6) revolves around important historical characters like Daniel Webster, John Tyler, William Henry Harrison, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren and Henry Clay. The play takes a fictional look at the very real incidents surrounding the 1840 presidential campaign and the seating of our 9th and 10th US Presidents. This presidential campaign was the first time that presidential candidates were treated as products.
The playwright and composer, W. Watts Biggers was an American novelist and advertising man. He is possibly best known as the co-creator and songwriter for such television cartoons as “Underdog” and “Tennessee Tuxedo”.
The world premiere production features the direction of Rachel Haider, recently named “Best Director” by Southern MN Scene. Choreography is by Shari Setchell, and music direction is by Kristen Kivell. The show features marvelous local talent including Minnesota Senator Kevin Dahle as President Tyler, as well as Jonah Berthelsen, Birch Carlson, Todd Carlson, Kevin Ely, Ann Etter, Jerry Fox, Catie Gardner, Bob Gregerson, Deon Haider, Joe Jorgensen, Noah Klein, Rolf Kragseth, Jack Lunderby, Erik Mandsager, Kat Middeldorp, Wendy Placko, Melody Pringle, Shari Setchell, Sophie Setchell, and Kevin Ward. Also featured will be Nancy Purbeck, partner of playwright W. Walter Biggers.
