Time of Its Life

Epic Enterprise had the time of its life . . . and they owe it all to Kairos Alive!
Despite the chill in the October air, a big white tent pitched in the Epic Enterprise parking lot became a hot venue for storytelling, movement, music and dancing. As a result of receiving an Arts Learning grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board, throughout this year Epic has been able to invite dance and storytelling specialists, Kairos Alive, to share their talent.
When they visit, Kairos usually performs in Epic’s large homerooms at their building in Dundas. But, with the increased space afforded by the large tent, they were able to invite friends and family of Life Enrichment participants, as well as those who take part in the employment program, to share in the Kairos Alive experience.
Kairos warmed up the group of approximately 70 people with movement exercises and chanting along to Up, Down, Side, Side and Head and Shoulders, Baby. Then the audience suddenly found themselves at a baseball game as avid Twins fan, Amanda Soular, enjoyed stepping up to the plate with her imaginary bat and running the bases while the crowd sang along to Take Me Out to the Ballgame.
As the music changed to Breathing In, Breathing Out, people started blooming like flowers and creating a beautiful rainbow with colorful scarves that they shared with a person next to them. Color streamed up into the air as the audience sang along and moved around the performance area. Life enrichment participant, Graham Rockne, added to the musical atmosphere as he did an accompaniment on drums and maracas to the song, Funga Alafia.
One of the highlights of Kairos’ sharing experience was the storytelling portion about “Scarves for Sale.” Giggles spread through the crowd as people were invited to the performance area to “steal” a scarf from the sleeping scarf salesman.
For the grand finale, Kairos asked everyone to find a partner—or two—to dance with and sing along to Time of My Life. People got up and celebrated the fun event at Epic with their friends and family. Some even made new friends as they danced to the closing song with the people next to them. According to the joyful movement and the abundance of smiles radiating through the tent shared by many community members, it was truly a great time at Epic’s Kairos Alive event.
