Ready to Ride?
Typically, on the last Friday of each month in cities across the world bicyclists are taking over the streets. This monthly event given the name Critical Mass, occurs without an official leader, allowing any biker to take the lead and determine the route. Rides can either be determined by popular vote or whoever happens to be at the front of the mass. This giant bike ride first began in San Francisco in 1992 with hopes of creating bicycle awareness to motorists. Critical Mass has since transformed into a worldwide movement occurring in more than 300 cities across the globe.
Many “massers,” as they are called argue against claims that Critical Mass is a political protest. Instead, they see it as a fun ride for bike enthusiasts and everyone in-between. For rides occurring on Fridays many riders shout out a friendly “Happy Friday” to pedestrians and motorists alike.
While Northfield had its first Critical Mass in September 2006, there have been few rides since. There fails to be a reoccurring specified day for the event. Due to its unofficial nature, anyone interested in a Northfield Critical Mass ride has the power to start one. With all of the local interest in making Northfield a bike friendly community, it would seem that a regular occurring Critical Mass in Northfield would be well received. What do you think Northfield?

Really?
Critical masses have never been a proper tool to encourage bike awareness or bike friendly development. They tend to simply make the general public angry, irritated, and otherwise inconvenienced. If you really care about developing proper bike awareness, support for bike trails and lanes, or just bike friendly behavior, this is absolutely the wrong way to go about it. Earning respect and legitimacy as a biker doesn't come from breaking traffic laws, it comes from obeying traffic laws and presenting a proper face to the public at large. There are numerous organizations and people within our community that have worked for years using proper channels to make Northfield into the bike friendly place that it is. Please use your better judgment before stepping on all of their work with a fashionable demonstration.
