ORPHAN TRAIN STORY TO BE TOLD

The Northfield Senior Center, 1621 Jefferson Pkwy, is hosting a luncheon, with featured speaker Ann Zemke of Blaine, MN, entitled “The Brave Journey of an Orphan Train Rider” on July 20 at 11:30 a.m. Zemke will tell the story of her grandmother, an orphan train rider, through the blocks of a memory quilt she made in her grandmother’s honor. Ann is a quilt maker who has designed and sewn over 150 unique quilts. Several years ago she became interested in her grandmother’s story of hardship and triumph and created a quilt, and then wrote a book, They Named Me Marjorie, to tell this story.

From 1854 to 1929 an estimated 150-250,000 children rode trains primarily from largely populated cities of the Eastern United States to farming communities in the Midwest and West to find a new home.
Ann Zemke’s grandmother took such an Orphan Train trip to Bertha, MN in 1906. The July 20 program begins with a chicken salad luncheon at 11:30 a.m.; the cost of the program is $10, and is open to the public. Reservations are required by July 14, and may be made by calling the Senior Center, 664-3700.
