A community-spirited event to benefit Northfield-area nonprofits is right around the corner. Northfield Shares, the nonprofit that formed as a result of the merging of 5th Bridge and Northfield Area Foundation, will host the Defeat of Jesse James Days Run/Walk on Sunday, September 7. The 5K run/walk and 15K run are scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. in downtown Northfield at the Northfield Armory (519 South Division Street). Proceeds from the event will be used to support the organization’s vital operating expenses. Online registration is now open at www.djjdrun.org. On-site registration will also be available on the day of the event.
Race Coordinator Bill Bleckwehl said, “We couldn’t be more excited about this year’s event. The Defeat of Jesse James Days is always a great time and we’re thrilled to be a part of it. It’s an awesome opportunity for members of the community to come together for exercise and fun, and to show their support for the wonderful community we all share.”
Now in its 35th year, the DJJD Run/Walk has, in recent history, drawn more than 600 participants and has raised more than $10,000 through registration fees.
According to Dale Ness, chair of the Northfield Shares Board, “Events like the Defeat of Jesse James Days Run/Walk are a testament to Northfield’s incredible sense of community. Year after year, I’m amazed and inspired by the town’s commitment to giving back. Members of the community really understand that the funds raised by this event, and others like it, are of vital importance for Northfield-area nonprofits.”
Throughout its history, the DJJD Run/Walk has been a family-friendly event – participants of all ages are welcome. For those interested, the road courses are USA Track & Field certified and the ChampionChip computerized timing system is in place to provide competitors with accurate results. Awards will be given to the first-place male and female finisher in both the 5K and 15K races in 13 age groups, which range from 14 and under to 70 and over.
