Nationally Acclaimed Indie Pop Rocker to Perform at the Tavern Lounge in Northfield
Critically acclaimed indie pop rocker Jonathan Rundman comes to the Tavern Lounge in Northfield on Thursday, June 21 from 8:30 to 11 p.m. It’s the second stop on his latest national tour, in support of his recently released self-titled retrospective CD. Deftly navigating between garage rock, Americana, sophisticated pop, and folk music—the new CD “Jonathan Rundman” summarizes the work of one of America’s most ingenious and entertaining independent songwriters.
Born and raised in the isolated Finnish-American communities of Michigan's Upper Peninsula, Jonathan Rundman has been writing songs and performing across the country since he was 18 years old. He emerged on the national music scene in the late-90s as a Chicago-based touring artist, generating rave reviews in Billboard, The New York Times, Performing Songwriter, Paste, and countless regional publications. Now living in Minneapolis, he continues to tour and record. Jonathan's songs can be heard on radio stations across America, in Scandinavia and England, and have been featured on the Ellen Degeneres Show.
“This is definitely one of those ‘not-to-be-missed’ kind of gigs,” says Jessica Paxton, host of KYMN Radio’s popular daily drive-time show. “To have someone of Jonathan’s caliber performing in an intimate setting like the Tavern Lounge – and with no cover charge! – is really exciting. It definitely points to the fact that Northfield is known – for performers as well as music lovers – as a great destination for live performance.”
Rundman has released multiple albums and written hundreds of songs. His new self-titled anthology collects songs from four albums released since 2000, as well as previously unreleased recordings, remixes, and brand new songs. Framed by infectious melodies and inventive arrangements, Rundman’s razor-sharp songwriting addresses the intricacies of adulthood: vocation (“Librarian,” “Workin’ My Committee”), parenting (“List of Things To Do”), politics (“The Serious Kind,” “Second Language”), romance (“Surgical Precision,” “Smart Girls”), looming mortality (“Dialysis Carpool,” “Bright Funeral,” “Ashes”), crises of faith (“If You Have a Question,” “That Man Upstairs”), and moments of joy and transcendence (“747s,” “Carol of the Bells,” “Forgiveness Waltz”).
Appearing on the CD are ten years worth of collaborators including producer Walter Salas-Humara of legendary indie band The Silos, duet vocalist Beki Hemingway, multi-instrumentalist Drew Glackin (Susan Tedeschi, The Hold Steady), violinist Mary Rowell (Sheryl Crow, Todd Rundgren), drummer Konrad Meissner (Matt Nathanson, My Brightest Diamond), percussionist/engineer Pat Tomek (The Rainmakers), and engineer Tom Herbers (Low, Soul Asylum).
