Metric Football Game Remembered
Recently, Dan Freeman interviewed Tom Porter, Bob Phelps, Jack Thurnblad and Jerry Mohrig about the historic and unique Metric Football Game played at between St. Olaf and Carleton Colleges in Laird Stadium on September 17, 1977. Mohrig suggested the idea to Thurnblad, Carleton Director of Men's Athletics. He contacted St Olaf Coach Porter who agreed to participate. Phelps, a St. Olaf publicist at the time, was in the booth with Dan Freeman who broadcast the game on KYMN. Eric Hilleman, Carleton College Archivist provided photos taken that September day.
Northfield Historical Society volunteers, coordinated by Susan Hvistandahl, are conducting oral interviews of Northfielders. These are videotaped for the Society’s archives. Some will be posted for viewing on the NHS web site. Hvistendahl is working on a story about the metric game for the November issue of the Northfield Entertainment Guide.
