Jar full of love for downtown Northfield

jarolove"I Love Downtown Northfield" buttons.  Hot off the press! Tim Sellars has these fine accoutrements at his shop. The buttons are currently available at Tiny's, Present Perfect, digs, By All Means Graphics and The Contented Cow.  And the Rare Pair!  They will also be available at the Taste of Northfield (June 19th) and other NDDC events.  The donation of $1 is a small price to pay for the hottest trend in accessory-wear.  And since you asked - I'll tell you why I love downtown Northfield.  Because all the shop owners I've met are so friendly and genuinely interested in supporting a sustainable town.  Good business for them of course, but they do go out of their way for their customers/neighbors. Case in point: the other night I went to another event at Tiny's (had a Reuben Hot Dog by the way - yum-o).  It was the Commons Cafe discussion led by the Northfield CSL.  Norm Butler and a few of his staff stopped by to say hello but got called away to take care of business.  Tim was willing to stay open a little later because our discussion went long.

love buttonsOur discussion that night happened to be about 'building community' - clearly we have the great beginnings in downtown Northfield.  Thanks NDDC for reminding us of that and thanks to all the business owners in downtown that make a (sometimes) tough go of it, but truly believe that this special place can be something a bit more community oriented than some of our suburban neighbors.

Cynthia Child is a board member of Northfield Citizens Online (NCO) and is a bit gushy today because she will be leaving town soon to move to the big city!

Button locations

Thanks Cynthia for the good words--both for the NDDC and downtown business owners.  Everyone works hard and we appreciate the gushing once in a while!  The buttons are currently available at Tiny's, Present Perfect, digs, By All Means Graphics and The Contented Cow.  Perhaps more locations in the future. They will also be available at the Taste of Northfield (June 19th) and other NDDC events.

Where exactly is the money

Where exactly is the money from the sale of these button's going? If you want to encourage people to shop downtown, why not make it accessable to EVERYONE. You overcharge for everything. There is not one thing that I have purchased downtown that was worth the price. In days like we are living today especially people want there money's worth. You simply do not get that in downtown Northfield. You try to create ambiance just by simply overcharging. As far as "friendliness" goes, are you including the Quality Bakery??? I will NEVER give those people my business EVER again. They really need to learn some customer service skills, and maybe take an anger managment class. I went in one sunny Saturday morning to get some doughnuts. I started picking some out and Mrs. Quality Bakery put them into a large box. I asked how many I had, and she stated 9. I responded that it would probably be cheaper to get a whole dozen right? She coldly stated they were sold individually. I figured ok 9 would probably be enough so I said ok that's all then. She already had the box taped shut. I also made the mistake of not reading a small crumpled up note saying they did not accept credit cards (another non-user friendly service). So Mrs. Quality Bakery WHIPPED open the box of doughnuts and started putting some back (putting the best ones back mind you). I paid for what I could afford at the time, and Mrs. Quality Bakery made the comment "maybe you can find some money in your car seats and come back and get another twist doughnut". I was dumbfounded and exited the store. Talking to my mother in law, she had a similar encounter with Mr. Quality Bakery. She made the mistake of handing him a twenty dollar bill. He began YELLING at her and pointing to the miniscule folded in on itself note stating they do not accept large bills.

YIKES! I'll stick to Cub doughnuts thank you.

Downtown Buttons

We also have the NDDC buttons at The Rare Pair!

Oh, and the last comment, OUCH.

I love shopping downtown and I think the stores are fairly priced. I think that all the shops have great quality items that are worth what we pay for them. As for the bakery, their donuts are amazing so I will go there no matter what anyone says. AND, stores that don't take credit cards are still friendly businesses. I don't think everyone understands how expensive it is to accept credit cards. It can be tough for small businesses to do. There are several ATM machines within one block of the bakery. Both banks have one as well as Tiny's. So maybe those could be helpful to those who don't have cash!

Oh, and by the way, the money helps put on all the wonderful events that the NDDC organizes. Check them out sometime. It also is used to promote Northfield to out of towners and current townies that don't come downtown!

I love ya Northfield businesses!

Rare Pair

I added that to the story for the historical record... ")

Buttons are now availble at

Buttons are now availble at Kids on Division as well.  I guess there are enough people who love downtown Northfield to make the buttons a popular item!  Thanks you.
