Jamaican Author Marcia Douglas to Appear at Carleton

marcia douglasAuthor Marcia Douglas, a Jamaican novelist and poet, will appear Monday, Oct. 27 at 4 p.m. in the Carleton College Gould Library Athenaeum. Douglas will read varied pieces of her work, including a passage from her second novel, Notes From a Writer’s Book of Cures and Spells (Peepal Tree Press Ltd., 2005), along with several poetry selections. The event is free and open to the public.

Douglas is a novelist and poet who was born in England and grew up in Jamaica. A scholar of African American and Caribbean literature, she currently teaches in the English department at the University of Colorado, Boulder. Her work has appeared in“Callaloo, Sisters of Caliban: A Multilingual Anthology of Contemporary Caribbean Women Poets and Sun Dog: Southeast Review. Her other novels include Madam Fate (Soho Press, 2003) and Electricity Comes to Cocoa Bottom (Peepal Tree Press Ltd., 1999).

Douglas comes to Carleton at the request of personal friend Carleton English professor Arnab Chakladar, who is currently teaching from Notes From a Writer’s Book of Cures and Spells in one of his courses.
