J. Grundy’s Rueb ‘N’ Stein Swings into Summer with Another Month of Great Live Music
School’s out for summer and the great live music continues at J. Grundy’s Rueb ‘N’ Stein in downtown Northfield. This month, the Upstairs Rueb is pleased to present the following fantastic gigs:
On Friday, June 8, from 8 p.m. to midnight, don’t miss a great double-bill featuring Po'Boy Local 151 and Bitter Roots. ($5 cover)
Po’Boy Local 151 is a country-rock/honky-tonk quintet. Just like the namesake sandwich, they’re a mixture of tasty musical ingredients: classic guitars, harmony vocals, upright bass and a whole lot of fun. Made up of players from some of the Twin Cities most established Country, Bluegrass, Folk and Roots Rock bands, and featuring 18-year-old State Fair Champion fiddler Catie Jo Pidel.
The Bitter Roots move fluidly between the upbeat, the mellow, and the scorching. Using both modern and vintage sensibilities, they combine intricate improvisations with soulful singing and sweet harmonies. Influenced largely by the San Francisco scene and The Allman Brothers, their music bears a golden era quality, but is hardly trapped in the past. Whether they're burning down the house or soothing your soul, Bitter Roots create heartfelt rock and roll that sizzles and smokes.
Friday, June 15, from 8:30 p.m. to 1 a.m., it’s the return of hometown favorites Matt Arthur & The Bratlanders, along with opening act Whiskey Plates (and no cover charge!).
As one of the area's most favorite bands gets set to debut their highly-anticipated second album, join Matt Arthur & The Bratlanders for an evening of rootsy Americana, country-folk, and fire-breathing rock & roll. Be ready to dance! Featuring Matt Arthur: Vocals, Acoustic Guitar, Banjo; Don Bratland: Electric Guitar, Harmonica, Banjo; Doug Bratland: Bass Guitar, Mandolin; and Joel Beithon: Drums & Percussion. Opening act Whiskey Plates, featuring Pete Christensen and Eric Lundberg, present “dark folk and a little needle scratch.”
Wrapping up another great month at the Rueb, on Saturday, June 23 from 9 p.m.-1 a.m., it’s once again The 8th Street Duo featuring Chad Johnson and Russell Franek.
Northfield natives and local favorites Johnson and Franek are known for their spot-on harmonies and diverse acoustic style. Their music is at the crossroads between Rock and Country, with a touch of modern folk -- influenced by the likes of Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Bob Seger, CCR, Rolling Stones, Lynrd Skynrd, Zac Brown, and Tom Petty.
