EVENT:  HOW I WROTE A MINNESOTA BOOK AWARD BOOK

Mark your calendars for a special two part series with 2008 Minnesota Book Award Winners.

The evening of October 2 will feature Doug Hoverson, author of award winning Minnesota book, LAND OF AMBER WATERS; THE HISTORY OF BREWING IN MINNESOTA, and Wang Ping, author of award winning short story collection, THE LAST COMMUNIST VIRGIN.  Hoverson has brewed beer, been a judge at breweries, and researched the breweries in our state.  He also teaches at St. Thomas Academy in Mendota Heights.  His talk will be interesting to beer connoisseurs and non imbibers!

Ping was born in China and grew up on a small island in the East China Sea.  After working in the fields of a mountain village commune and attending Beijiing University, she left China to study in the United States.  She will discuss how she developed her characters and how her own experience shaped the stories.  She is the author of several books and currently teaches at Macalester College in St. Paul.

On Thursday, November 13, mystery and fictions readers are in for a great treat.  Award winning Minnesota writer William Kent Krueger, 2008 winner for genre fiction with his book THUNDER BAY, will discuss the background for writing his Cork O'Connor series.  All eight of his Cork O'Connor books have been Minnesota Book Award finalists, four of the eight winning the Award.  The ninth Cork O'Connor novel, RED KNIFE, was released in September.  His popular mysteries are set in the North Shore and Canada.

These programs are supported by the Minnesota Book Awards through grants from the Minnesota Department of Education - State Library Services and the Minnesota Library Association Foundation.
