The next event in the Northfield History Month Celebration is a presentation by Carleton College Archivist Eric Hillemann of his book “A Beacon So Bright:  The Life of Laurence McKinley Gould.” In addition to chronicling his life, Hillemann’s book tells the story of Gould’s work at Carleton College where he served from 1932-1962, including seventeen as president. Known as “Mr. Antarctica”, Gould was a polar explorer and geologist who, rather than becoming a politician, leading a major foundation or directing NASA, devoted himself to higher education, and to Carleton College, in particular.

Hillemann will speak at the Northfield Historical Society on Thursday, June 19, at 6:30 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.
