Why is the bike race a state secret every year?

We live on Washington Street, and Every Single Year on the 4th of July we are woken up by a bike race (and their dratted honking lead car) that lasts from wretchedly early morning well into late afternoon, and shuts down all of downtown while they're at it.  And yet, there's never a mention of it in the paper, never an article, no advertisements, nor is it listed here - what's the deal?  Where do these people come from?  Is the secret service involved?  How else would they so masterfully keep it a secret Every Single Year?

My word, that sounded cranky...

I shouldn't write posts under the influence of way too many mosquito bites.  I don't mind the bike race, really I don't, and it's kind of fun and celebratory to watch them zoom by.  But it just seems so mysterious, every year.  Anybody know what the deal is?

Ben Witt, owner of Milltown Cycle in Faribault, is an organizer of the race and a real nice guy.

To attone for the crankyness of your initial post, you can volunteer to help at next year's race.

Mandatory volunteering

I guess I'll have to!   I promise to volunteer if I see or hear any form of publicity and/or news about it before the race actually begins next year.  :-)

Ha! Thought I'd forget,
