First National Bank of Northfield, the longtime cornerstone of Northfield’s banking community, has awarded two college scholarships to Northfield High School (NHS) seniors. The recipients of this year’s $1,500 awards are Sandy Carson of Northfield, Minn., daughter of Mark and Alice Carson, and Nathan Berthelsen of Northfield, Minn., son of Mike and Melissa Berthelsen. The award is unique in that applicants must enroll in either St. Olaf College or Carleton College. In the case of this year’s award winners, Carson will attend Carleton and Berthelsen will attend St. Olaf.

For more than 10 years, First National has awarded two high school seniors scholarships – one is marked for an NHS graduate attending St. Olaf College, and the other Carleton College. The scholarship program is just one of the ways in which First National has given back to the community across its 140-year history.

First National CEO Dave Shumway said, “We wish Sandy and Nathan all the best next year. First National has always felt a deep commitment to the people, businesses and culture of the Northfield community, and since its founding, this scholarship program has been a wonderful extension of our dedication to caring for our hometown and the many people who make it a great place to call home.”

First National Bank of Northfield was founded in 1872 and has been locally owned ever since. Internationally recognized as the bank that defeated Jesse James, First National has been inextricably tied to Northfield throughout its history. The bank provides a full range of banking products and services to individual and business customers in the greater Northfield area.
