William H. Laird Professor of Religion and the Liberal Arts, Emeritus, Anne E. Patrick will present Carleton College's Honors Convocation address on Friday, May 29 at 3 p.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel.  Professor Patrick's address is titled "On Being Unfinished (De Imperfectione)."  A celebrated annual tradition at Carleton, the Honors Convocation takes place on the last Friday of spring term and formally acknowledges the achievements and service to the community made by students and faculty in the past academic year. This event is free and open to the public.

Patrick, who retired from Carleton this Spring, began her career at the College in 1980, becoming the first woman and first Roman Catholic to join the all-male, all white Protestant Carleton Department of Religion, “brought new horizons to Carleton and to the department,” said Richard Crouter, John M. and Elizabeth W. Musser Professor of Religious Studies, Emeritus. She received her bachelor’s degree from Medaille College, and earned a master’s degree from the University of Maryland and a PhD from the University of Chicago.  A Sister of the Holy Names and past president of the Catholic Theological Society of America, Patrick was also a founding vice-president of the International Network of Societies for Catholic Theology.

Patrick’s research focuses in the areas of religion and literature and Christian feminist theology and ethics. She is the author of numerous articles and reviews, including the book Liberating Conscience: Feminist Explorations in Catholic Moral Theology (Continuum International Publishing Group, 1997). Her newest volume, Conscience in Context: Vocation, Virtue, and History (Continuum International Publishing Group, December 31, 2009), will be published at the end of this year, and she has already begun work on her next book, entitled Women, Conscience, and the Creative Process. This spring she will return to Washington, D.C., her hometown, to spend more time with her family and religious community.
