DOROTHY GUSTAFSON
Dorothy Gustafson, age 91 of Northfield, passed away Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at the Three Links Care Center in Northfield. Family Services were held at the St. Paul Episcopal Church in Duluth on Monday, May 5th with burial in the Church Columbarium.
Dorothy Alice Gustafson was born January 24, 1917 in Duluth, daughter of Frederic and Emmeline (Meredith) Fuller. She was raised in Duluth, member of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, graduated from Duluth Central High School, and then Duluth State Teachers College (now UMD) obtaining her teaching degree in English.
Dorothy taught high school English and first taught in Wrenshal, MN then Moose Lake where she met Ernest Gustafson, they later married on August 27, 1949. Ernest had completed his degree at the University of Iowa to be a high school principal. They first went to Chatfield, MN, then Tipton, IA, Dennison, IA, Cherokee, IA, and then North Platte, NE. In 1965 they moved to Northfield when Ernest became principal of Northfield High School. Dorothy taught English in Dennison and Remsen, IA, North Platte, and Faribault, MN.
In addition to teaching English, she often directed school plays and helped coach the speech and debating teams. She was active with the American Association of University Women (AAUW), the Faculty Wives Club, and was pleased that both of their sons went into teaching.
Dorothy Gustafson is survived by sons Frederic of Duluth, Dr. Thomas of San Marcos, TX; brothers Tom (Mary) Fuller of Milaca, Arthur (Miriam) Fuller of Peoria, IL. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Ernest; brother Meredith “Jack” Fuller; and sister Elizabeth “Betty” Rudeseal.
Memorials may be made to the St Paul’s Episcopal Church. Arrangements by the Bierman Funeral Home of Northfield.
