The Daddy Squeeze Trio brings their signature blend of upbeat swing to Northfield’s Tavern Lounge
Submitted by Jessica Paxton on Wed, 03/26/2014 - 10:31am
The Daddy Squeeze Trio, featuring accordionist extraordinaire Dan “Daddy Squeeze” Newton, along with acclaimed musicians Mark Kreitzer and Tom Lewis, will make their Northfield debut on Saturday, March 29 at The Tavern Lounge. The Daddy Squeeze Trio will perform from 8 to 11:30 p.m. and there is no cover charge.
The Daddy Squeeze Trio is known for “making great music even better.” They swing the standards, mixing in Latin and rock grooves, all the while surprising their audiences with slightly twisted covers of forgotten pop tunes.
Newton's fresh approach to the much-maligned squeeze-box and his mind-boggling repertoire of both original and traditional material will change the mind of the most hardened accordion skeptic. He draws influences for songs and tunes from such sources as French Musette, Gypsy Swing, Cajun, Jug band, Tex-Mex and Cumbia. He calls this global gumbo “ethnoclectic” music. Daddy Squeeze entertains and enlightens his audiences with stories and colorful anecdotes about the accordion and his experiences while making a living playing the instrument he loves.
Newton explains: “Imagine, if you can, a Tango treatment of Cher's ‘Bang Bang,’ a medley of traditional Irish/Beatles/Jazz standard tunes or a Tom Waits-influenced beat poetry reading of ‘Takin' Care of Business.’” The Trio also presents an eclectic mix of Louisiana-style dance music, Tex-Mex, Brazilian Forro, Cumbia, French Musette, and Gypsy Swing.
Dan “Daddy Squeeze” Newton has been dazzling audiences with his vast repertoire and creative accordion style for over 30 years. He is a talented composer/arranger who has produced over 25 recordings. Newton has appeared at dozens of festivals in Finland, Canada, Austria and across the USA. He has performed at Lincoln Center in New York City, Kennedy Center in Washington D.C., The Winnipeg Folk Festival and is a frequent guest on Garrison Keillor’s “A Prairie Home Companion.” Newton spends most of his time playing accordion with his group Café Accordion Orchestra, performing vintage Swing, Latin, American, and French Café music. He leads a number of bands including Jumbo Ya Ya, Rockin’ Pinecones, The Daddy Squeeze Band and The Hula Peppers.
