CVRO Fall Concert: Opera's Greatest Hits October 25-26
Submitted by Dan Bergeson on Sun, 10/20/2013 - 10:49am
The Cannon Valley Regional Orchestra, conducted by Paul Niemisto, begins its thirty-fourth season with "Opera's Greatest Hits" in collaboration with the Minnesota Opera, the Red Wing Singers, The Sheldon Theatre, the Red Wing High School Chorus, and the Shattuck-St. Mary's Vocal Performance Program. Minnesota Opera Teaching Artist, Bergen Baker, is coordinating this event which will be offered in Red Wing at the Sheldon Theatre on Friday, Oct. 25 at 7 p. m. and on Sat. Oct. 26th at 2 p. m.
The music in the program will be familiar to many listeners. The concert begins with the Overture to The Marriage of Figaro by Mozart and then moves into three acts featuring such music as Lebiamo or the Drinking Song from La Traviata by Verdi, Va Pensiero from Nabucco by Verdi, and selections from The Magic Flute. Baker and Minnesota Opera resident Artist Christie Hageman will sing the Flower Duet from Lakme by Delibes. The concluding act features the famous Toreador's aria from Carmen by Bizet, Musetta's Waltz from La Boheme by Puccini, and "Make our Garden Grow" from Candide by Bernstein.
Ms. Baker is preceding the concert series with a three-week residency at Red Wing High School where she will engage the students in interactive lessons and rehearsals of the opera choruses offered in the upcoming concert program. She is hailed by the StarTribune newspaper as having a "fetching blend of grace, wit and humor on stage." Ms. Bergen has performed professionally in operatic venues locally and abroad, including with Minnesota Opera, The Minnesota Orchestra, Skylark Opera and La Musica Lirica in San Marino, Italy.
Tickets are available by calling 800-899-5759 or online at www.sheldontheatre.org. There are adult and student tickets available for "Opera's Greatest Hits."
