The Civil War: The Aftermath of Gettysburg and Vicksburg in 1863

Civil War student Jim Stark will present the fifth talk in a series commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Civil War on Thursday, December 19, at 6:00 p.m. at the Northfield Historical Society, 408 Division Street.

The focus will be the aftermath of Gettysburg and Vicksburg when the south was reeling from the twin defeats.  Mr. Stark will cover the fall of Port Hudson, which turned control of the Mississippi down to the Gulf of Mexico to the north. Also included will be the heroics of the 54th Massachusetts at Fort Wagner, the New York draft riots, guerilla activity in Kansas and Missouri and other conflicts. He will examine the Gettysburg Address.

The program is free and open to the public.
