Carleton's Gould Library to Host Unique 'Vamp and Tramp' Trunk Show
Nationally-known art vendors Vamp and Tramp Booksellers, purveyors of fine press and artists' books, will host a trunk show of their offerings on Wednesday, April 22 at 4 p.m. in the Gould Library Athenaeum. Considered a show-and-tell about the world of contemporary book arts, this unique event is free and open to the public.
Owners Vicky and Bill Stewart represent over 250 contemporary fine presses and books artists. While they maintain a website and exhibit regularly at selected book fairs (including one at the Minnesota Center for Book Arts on Friday, April 24), their forte is taking the actual work to potential customers. They drive around the United States from mid-January until Thanksgiving, bringing the works they represent to institutional and private customers. Their mini-van literally becomes a traveling gallery—a sort of movable feast of Book Arts—as they spread the word about and beauty of the wonders of contemporary fine press and artists’ books.
Artists' books represent a unique art form designed by the artist to actively engage the viewer. The books combine textual and visual elements to create an intimate dialogue between the viewer and the artist, one that can not be equated with simply viewing a piece of artwork on a gallery wall. Vicky Stewart comments, "Like a traditional book, they are meant for personal contemplation and enjoyment."
Vamp and Tramp books showcase an endless variety of talents and topics, from prints to handmade paper, from memoirs to historical and political events—all of which assert a bold and personal message from the artist.
Although these rare artistic treasures are usually purchased by museums, liberal arts college libraries have become increasingly interested in them to supplement traditional artistic collections, as well as to enhance resources for art and literature students.
