Carleton College To Host Electronics Recycling Day on March 20th

E Waste

Carleton College’s Information Technology Services (ITS) department will sponsor a personal and home electronics equipment recycling day on Saturday, March 20 from 9 a.m. – 12 noon.

The event’s partner, Material Processing Corporation (MPC), allows local residents to recycle personal and/or home computing equipment for a small fee. MPC will have a large truck available for local residents to drop their items in the parking lot south of Laird Stadium, which sits adjacent to Highway 19. (For a Carleton College map, visit http://www.carleton.edu/visitors/.)

Allowable equipment includes computers, monitors, printers, keyboards, mice and other basic computing equipment. This disposal is for individuals only and is not available to businesses.

This is the fourth such event held at Carleton, but for the first time users must pay a small fee to recycle their items. Due to the overwhelming response by residents in Minnesota, electronics manufacturers, which are required to pay for the recycling of residential electronics, have already met the recycling goals set by the State of Minnesota. Because electronics manufacturers are not required to recycle additional amounts of these items for free, the cost burden falls on the individual.

The fee schedule for items are as follows:

  • $35.00 large 32” TV’s – or larger
  • $20.00 smaller TV’s, large printers, large fax machines, computer monitors, microwaves
  • $7.00 computer systems, small home printers, small fax machines, stereo equipment, VCR’s, DVD players, similar electronics
  • $2.00 electronic games, laptops, calculators, portable audio players, iPods, cordless phones, other small electronic devices
  • Free for cell phones, rechargeable batteries, keyboards, and computer mice.

A free option is available from local Best Buy retail locations. See the Best Buy website for details.
