The Carleton College Chinese Music Ensemble will perform in concert Sunday, May 24 at 3 p.m. in the Concert Hall. The performance is free and open to the public.
The concert will feature both classical and folk music in the Chinese tradition. The members of the Chinese Music Ensemble play a variety of musical instruments, including the zhongruan (a plucked stringed instrument), the erhu and gaohu (Chinese violins), the guzheng (Chinese table harp), and the bawu, dizi and hulusi (Chinese flutes). The performance will also feature an appearance by the Carleton College Chinese Music Choir.
Under the direction of Carleton music instructor Gao Hong, this unique musical groups have performed at various events, including Carleton’s international festival, gallery openings, and Chinese New Year celebration. The ensemble has also performed at the Chinese Minghua Language School in St. Paul and at the Northfield High School, where Dice also teaches a Chinese language class, the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and at the Mall of America, where the Ensemble was invited especially at the invitation of the Chinese Heritage Foundation.
Members of the Chinese Music Ensemble include Carleton seniors Piaomu Liu (China), Yirong Zhu (China), Emily Brosius (Ann Arbor, Mich.), and Mollie Lam (Cedar Rapids, Iowa); juniors Marcel Gozali (Singapore), Andrew Terwilliger (Lancaster, Wis.), and Katherine Turnage (Gaffney, S.C.); sophomores Charlie Liu (China) and Rui Liang (Japan); and first-year students Yuanpu Wang (China), Shao Min Tan (Singapore), Ava Navasero (Singapore), and Xinxin Xie (China).
Dice, an expert pipa player, began performing at age 12 and later graduated with honors from the Central Conservatory of Music in Beijing. She has won numerous honors, including first prize in the Hebei Professional Young Music Performers Competition, a Bush Artist Fellowship, and an Asian Pacific Award. Dice has performed throughout Europe, Australia, China, and the United States in solo concerts and with symphony orchestras.
