Robert Oden III, Senior Commercialisation Manager in the New York office of EcoSecurities—one of the world’s leading companies in the business of originating, developing, and trading carbon credits—will present the weekly convocation at Carleton College on Friday, April 24 at 10:50 a.m. in the Skinner Memorial Chapel. Oden’s appearance is free and open to the public.

Discussing the environmental and economic impact created by carbon reduction, Oden will demonstrate how such action can result in substantial gains in both profitability and emissions reductions.

normal"> "Times New Roman"">Over the past decade, EcoSecurities has been involved in many key events in the global carbon market, such as developing the first Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) project registered under the Kyoto Protocol, also the first to be issued with carbon credits. EcoSecurities currently works on over 400 projects in 34 different countries, employing 18 different technologies, and is on target to generate a net 118 million carbon credits by 2012.

normal"> "Times New Roman"">The carbon market allows companies that invest in green technologies to reduce carbon dioxide emissions to sell these carbon reductions to other, more carbon-intensive industries. Although these carbon offsets are still largely voluntary, there is increasing movement towards a mandatory cap-and-trade system, in which emitters would be required to purchase credits for carbon emissions. Such a system seeks to create an economic incentive for innovation and efficiency to reduce emissions.

His experience gives him an unusual insight into the various regulatory regimes already in place, and unusual perspective on the task ahead, and an insightful supply of analogies and anecdotes.
