Submitted by Dan Bergeson on Tue, 05/14/2013 - 2:53pm
The Cannon Valley Regional Orchestra (CVRO) will complete its 34th season with two concerts playing music to celebrate the coming of spring. Under the theme ”Voices of Spring”, mezzo soprano soloist Deesa Staats will join the CVRO on Thursday, May 16, at 7:00 P.M. at the Paradise Center for the Arts in Faribault and on Friday, May 17, at 7:00 P.M. at St. Ansgar’s Lutheran Church in Cannon Falls.
Deesa Staats has become a well-known singer in the region from her many musical theater appearances. She has also been featured with the CVRO several times doing opera and other classical music. She will sing Italian composer Ottorino Respighi’s work for mezzo soprano and orchestra entitled ”Aretusa”, based on poem by romantic English poet Percy Shelley. The theme of this poem, in part, is about a Greek goddess who comes down from the snowy mountains to greet spring. Ms. Staats will also sing a short selection by British composer Ralph Vaughan Williams.
The CVRO will be featured in Leonard Bernstein’s ”Overture to Candide”, a Viennese waltz, a suite of English pieces about springtime, and Felix Mendelssohn’s atmospheric overture about the Scottish Hebrides.
Tickets for the May 16 concert can be purchased from the Paradise Center for the Arts by calling 507-332-7372 or online at www.paradisecenterforthearts.org.Ticketsfor the May 17 concert can be purchased from the Northfield Arts Guild by calling 507-645-8877 or online at www.northfieldartsguild.org.

In addition, Dr. Niemisto is the Artistic Director of the Vintage Band Festival, an international gathering of wind and brass players, taking place in Northfield this summer, August 1-4.
These CVRO concerts are sponsored by Ferndale Markets in Cannon Falls and the seasonal sponsor Community Resource Bank.
