ArtSwirl: Japanese Garden Tour
ArtSwirl 2009 continues with an informative and contemplative hour at Carleton College's Japanese garden—named Jo Ryo En, or The Garden of Quiet Listening. Selected by the Journal of Japanese Gardening as one of the top ten Japanese gardens in the United States, the garden is nestled behind Watson Hall (E. First and Maple Streets).
The tour will be led by Bardwell Smith and Margit Johnson. Bardwell is a Professor of Asian Studies Emeritus at Carleton College, where he taught from 1960 to 1995. He launched the creation of the garden and raised funds for its construction and continued maintenance. Margit is a long-time volunteer who helps maintain the garden.
