The first two weeks of the Summer Food Service Program (SPSF) have been a success! For the second year, the Community Action Center of Northfield has sponsored a Northfield site of this USDA program, which provides free lunches to kids 18 and younger on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays of each week. Lunches run from 11:30 AM to 12:15 PM at the Jefferson Square Townhomes Leasing Office, and kids can come anytime during that interval to receive a sandwich, milk, fruits, and vegetables. The USDA is an equal opportunity provider and employer, and kids of any income and situation can eat lunch with no qualifications other than their ages. After a slow start, the program has nearly doubled in size, and we are hopeful for continued growth as the summer continues. If you are interested in attending and would like to find out more, you can contact the Northfield CAC at (507) 664-3550.

Northfield Hospital’s First Touch Birth Center was recently recognized by the March of Dimes and Minnesota Hospital Association (MHA) for its commitment to reducing early elective deliveries. Research shows that important development takes place for a baby’s brain and lungs during the last few weeks of pregnancy. Yet according to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), early elective deliveries --- which include inductions and planned Cesarean sections that are not medically necessary --- still account for 10 to 15 percent of all deliveries nationally.
