Read Locally on National Bookstore Day
Saturday, November 7, 2009 marks the first National Bookstore Day, a great idea cooked up by the folks at Publishers Weekly to promote local independent bookstores. This would be a great opportunity to stop in at Northfield's downtown independent bookstore, Monkey See, Monkey Read and do your holiday book shopping. Jerry Bilek, the proprietor, has a great selection in the shop, and he's always happy to place special orders for books he doesn't have on hand. The shop is open from 10 to 5 on Saturday.
Jerry and his shop were also the subject of Nora Cassidy's timely story on Pressville recently, "Jerry Bilek Ponders the Future of Books—and His Bookshop."
Remember that Northfield also boasts two independent bookstores associated with the two colleges, the St. Olaf Bookstore and the Carleton Bookstore. Both stores have Saturday hours during the academic year: 10-5 at St. Olaf and 10-4 at Carleton.

It is such a shame to see
It is such a shame to see local bookshops close down because of so many factors especially when people's attention are taken by the glamorized version of others. I also read about local bookshops closing down in other towns.
