Northfield Writers: Early Holiday Shopping Edition

Autumn brings brilliant colors, cooler temperatures, and a crop of great new books from local authors, including Shannon Hyland-Tassava and Patrick Mader.

Back in April, I introduced you to local author Shannon Hyland-Tassava, whose writing is inspired by the hard work of being a modern stay-at-home mom.  Shannon is a contributor to the new anthology P.S. What I Didn't Say: Unsent Letters to Our Female Friends, now available from Seal Press.  In her essay, Shannon writes about how her decision to be a stay-at-home mom put pressure on one of her close female friendships.

"I’ve become used to the hyper-competitiveness that sometimes shows up within the ranks of certain insecure moms," she writes. "Still, I never expected to field mommy-wars direct fire from a longtime friend…”

Shannon is profiled on the P.S.: What I Didn't Say blog, where she's described as the book's "most enthusiastic" contributor.  The book is available from Amazon.com, or better yet, support your local bookseller and have Jerry special order a copy for you. The book is sure to make a great gift for a special female friend.

If your child is like my three-year old nephew, he's obsessed with wheels.  And for the holidays this year, I know that my nephew will love the new book from local children's author Patrick Mader, Big Brother Has Wheels.  The book is the latest collaboration between Mader and illustrator Andrew Holmquist, the team that created Oma Finds a Miracle and Oma and Opa Together.

"With a new vehicle on every page," the book description says, "Big Brother Has Wheels will entrance kids hungering for wheels of their own. Young readers can follow Big Brother’s travels as he grows into each new set of wheels, while grown-ups will appreciate details that recall their own childhoods. Join his parents, his brothers and sisters, his friends, and even his own children as they wonder, 'What will Big Brother drive next?'"

The book is due out in October, and can be ordered now from Mader's website
