Northfield launches Adopt-A-Pothole program

adopt a pothole.gifFaced with the recent state cuts to LGA and the overwhelming number of repairs required, the city of Northfield has launched an innovative new program to engage citizens. Northfield's new "Adopt A Pothole" program is modeled on the successful "Adopt a Highway" program that's been around for about a decade.

April Sloof, Northfield's infrastructure head describes it this way: "We are excited to be able to present this opportunity to families in town. We think that Northfield's strong sense of civic pride will really result in widespread changes as people are looking for another opportunity to spend some 'quality time' with the family and spreading boiling tar on local roads will certainly provide the 'bonding' experience they're looking for."

"No pun intended", she added.

The city plans on implementing an online recognition program for those people who really go the extra mile. "We tossed around a bunch of ideas to highlight people who are 'giving back' in a big way. We considered 'Pothole Enthusiasts' or 'The Black Shoes', but finally we decided to go with 'Potheads'. We're adding a page to the city website with the banner "Northfield's Biggest Potheads" and a listing of all those who adopt more than one pothole. I think it's going to be a real badge of pride to be recognized by the city like this."
