Mrs. Mildred Zimmerman, age 92, of Scottsdale, AZ and formerly of Northfield, passed away on Sunday, January 13, 2013 in Scottsdale. Funeral services will be 2:00 pm Thursday, January 17th at the Bierman Funeral Home in Northfield with burial at the Oaklawn Cemetery. Visitation will be Thursday 1 hour prior to Services at the Funeral Home.
Mildred Esther Zimmerman was born November 12, 1920 in Northfield, MN, daughter of Henry and Rachel (Cleland) Bickel and was raised on the family farm east of Northfield. She attended country school and then Northfield High School and was baptized at the Northfield Moravian Church. On January 24, 1941 she was united in marriage to Roger Albert Zimmerman and they made their home in Dennison, MN.
In 1948 they moved to Minneapolis where Roger began working for Ralston Purina and Mildred took a job with the Sears and Roebuck Company. In 1956, due to Roger’s severe arthritic condition and other health concerns, they moved to Phoenix and Mildred was able to transfer her position to the Sears and Roebuck in Phoenix where she continued to work for 30 years until retirement.
In Arizona they were longtime members of the Garfield United Methodist Church which later merged with two other small Methodist Churches to form the Albright United Methodist Church. Over the years Roger’s health continued to decline and Mildred helped to care for him for many years until his death on October 17, 1990. In retirement she was active with the Albright Methodist Church, volunteered at the local hospitals in Phoenix, and loved spending time with her grandchildren.
Mildred Zimmerman is survived by her son Dennis (Carol) of Phoenix; grandson Jeremy Zimmerman of Phoenix sister Dorothy Dammer of Northfield; sisters-in-law Norma Bickel and Dorothy Warner both of Northfield; 4 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren and many relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Roger; granddaughter Kellie Hicks; and brother Donald Bickel.
Funeral arrangements are by the Bierman Funeral Home.
