Jean was one of five children and spent her childhood in Des Moines, Iowa. After graduating from East High, she followed her older sister to St. Olaf College. There she met her husband, Orval Perman, on a blind date and married him on November 2, 1941. Later that year, Orv joined the Army where he spent 3 years overseas during World War II. Jean remained in Northfield and completed her degree and graduated in 1943. After Orv returned to Northfield in 1945, he and Jean raised their five children and owned and operated Perman’s Family Apparel until 1993.
Jean was a wonderful example of giving service to her community. She was involved in establishing Northfield Nursery School, was a charter member of the Northfield Arts Guild, served on the Laura Baker School Board, and on many projects at St. John’s Church. Her caring demeanor was shared through volunteer work with Hospice and the Stephen’s Ministry. Jean and Orv were honored with Northfield’s Joseph Heywood Award in 1993 for their service to the community.
Jean had a special love for traveling, gardening, playing bridge, entertaining in her home, and spending time at the lake. She was not only an avid spectator of sports, but a willing and enthusiastic participant. She was game for anything. She will be remembered for her gracious hospitality, her warmth, and sense of fun. Her high energy and happiness were her hallmark. Jean had a remarkable gift for finding and sharing joy.
