Florence Lucille Hovland was born on June 5, 1918 to Isaac and Ingebor (Brue) Retrum on the family farm in Blanchardville, Wisconsin. She graduated from Blanchardville High School in 1936. She attended Augsburg College in Minneapolis and graduated from Deaconess Hospital Nursing School as an RN in 1940. While at Augsburg she met Ruben Hovland and married him in 1940. After living in Renville and Owatonna they moved to Northfield in 1945 raising their 5 children.
Florence has been a very active member of Bethel Lutheran Church participating in every committee including kitchen, ladies aid and sewing circle. She was also active in PTA, hospital auxiliary, flower club, Rainbow Saddle Club, bridge club and many bowling leagues. She loved to travel, cross country ski, camping and crochet. She loved clothes and was always very particular about what she was wearing.
Florence is preceded in death by her parents, Isaac and Ingebor Retrum; sister, Ione Retrum; brothers, Robert and Richard; husband, Ruben Hovland and companion Chuck Lunder. She is survived by her children, Jerelyn (Clyde) Cobb of Maple Grove and Oceanside, CA, Janet (Carl) Peterson of Minnetonka and Green Valley, AZ, Charles of New York City, New York, Thomas of Portland, OR and Don Hovland of Birchwood, WI; 6 grandchildren, Mark (Tiffany) Meister, Martha (Tom) Pressner, Keith (Kristina) Peterson, Karleen (Mark) Leslie, Kip Peterson and Wendy Schuefler; 13 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild and other relatives. Memorials are preferred to the Bethel Lutheran Kitchen Fund or the Northfield Retirement Center.
Funeral arrangements are by the Bierman Funeral Home.
