Bessie Marie Tuma

tuma, bessie Bessie Marie Barta Tuma was born December 6, 1921, in Lonsdale, Minnesota, to William T. and Otillia (Dvorak) Barta. She was baptized at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Lonsdale and at the age of two, moved with her family to Faribault. When she was four, the family moved to a farm at Union Lake. She attended country school and New Prague High School. Her first holy communion and confirmation was at IC Church in Lonsdale. She married Jerry V. Tuma on August 22, 1939, at Immaculate Conception. Bessie and Jerry had known each other since they were children. After marriage they farmed until 1972 when they moved to Faribault.


Glenn E. Nelson

nelson, glenn Glenn Edward Nelson was born January 31, 1918, in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, to Arthur and Emily (Hagen) Nelson. He graduated from Chippewa Falls High School in 1936 and received his B.A. from St. Olaf College in 1940. He attended Marquette Medical School in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He married Elaine Loftness on September 6, 1942 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Fairfax, Minnesota. In 1943 he received his Medical Degree and interned at St. Luke’s Hospital in Duluth. In May 1944 he joined the US Navy and served in the Pacific aboard the USS Bates, and during that time he was awarded the Silver Star for distinguished service and valor.


Diane Schultz

schultz, diane Diane Elaine Schultz, age 61, passed away at her home with her family by her side, on Wednesday morning, April 30, 2008, after a brief battle with ovarian cancer.

Diane was born September 1, 1946, in Northfield, to Roy and Marion (Kruse) Docken. She was baptized on September 29, 1946, at Solor Lutheran Church and confirmed November 5, 1961, at St. John’s Lutheran Church. She graduated from Northfield High School in 1964. She married John Schultz on April 16, 1966, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Northfield. After marriage Diane stayed home with the children. In 1978, she went to work for Ryt-Way Packaging. After 10 years with Ryt-Way she went to work for Malt-O-Meal and worked there for the past 20 years.


Helen Zaun

zaun, helen Helen Elizabeth Lambrecht Zaun was born January 21, 1942, in New Prague, Minnesota, to Clarence and Mary Ann (Breimhorst) Lambrecht. She was baptized, confirmed and attended school at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church. She graduated from New Prague High School in 1959 and attended the Minnesota School of Business in Minneapolis. She married Ronald Zaun on December 28, 1963, at St. Wenceslaus Church. Shortly after marriage they moved to Wheaton, Minnesota, and Helen worked as a medical transcriptionist for several years at Wheaton Community Hospital. In 1990 they moved to Northfield and Helen worked at Queen of Peace Hospital in New Prague until retiring in 2004.


Helen Zaun funeral notice

Helen Lambrecht Zaun, age 66 of Northfield, passed away Tuesday morning, April 29, 2008, in Northfield, the result of a pedestrian/automobile accident.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 A.M. Saturday, May 3, 2008, at the Church of St. Dominic in Northfield. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Northfield. Visitation will be 4-8PM Friday, May 2, 2008, at the Church of St. Dominic. Visitation will continue at the church on Saturday one hour prior to the funeral.

Survivors include her husband, Ron; 3 children: Robert and wife Kimberley of Orono, David and wife Sarah of Rosemount, Melissa of St. Cloud; 6 grandchildren; 2 sisters and their husbands: Janet & Terry Rezac, Joyce and Ray Hertaus, all of New Prague; one brother and his wife, Bobby and Linda Lambrecht of New Prague; and her brother-in-law, Jim Kubes of New Prague.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Northfield Senior Center or St. Dominic’s Church.


Gena Grinde

grinde, gena Gena J. Grinde was born May 19, 1907, on the family farm in Wheeling Township, Rice County, Minnesota, to Erick and Anna (Hilde) Grinde. She was baptized and confirmed at Valley Grove Church and attended country school south of Dennison. She remained on the farm all of her life until moving to Northfield in 1991, where she moved to the Three Links Apartments and lived with her sister Emma. Emma passed away in 1998 and Gena remained in the apartments until last month.

Gena was a strong willed and independent lady who did things her own way. She loved to quilt and even at the age of 100 she was still sewing quilt tops that were used for missions.

Visitation will be 3-7PM Sunday, May 4, 2008, at the Benson & Langehough Funeral Home in Northfield. Visitation will continue at the church on Monday one hour prior to the funeral.

Survivors include her husband, John; 3 sons: Timothy, Thomas and wife Betty, Jason and wife Heather, all of Northfield; 5 grandchildren: Tessa, Andrew, Brandon, Nicole and Tyler; and many in-laws, relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents.


Patricia LaBeaux

DSC02032a Patricia Ann "Patti" LaBeaux was born January 29, 1936, in Minneapolis, to Wade L. and Ann (Piersak) Norton. She was raised in Northeast Minneapolis, was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic Faith and graduated from Benilde - St. Margaret High School in 1954. Following her education she worked as a telephone operator. She married Charles R. LaBeaux on December 21, 1957, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Columbia Heights. Shortly after marriage they moved to Fridley and Patti stayed at home to raise the Children. In 1976 she began working in Fridley and in 1982 she went to work for the accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche in downtown Minneapolis.

Mary P. Hanson

hanson, mary obit Mary P. Hanson was born July 22, 1934, in Lonsdale, Minnesota, to Joseph and Phoebe (Dvorak) Hruza. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Dominic’s Catholic Church and attended Rosary School. She graduated from Northfield High School in 1953 and worked at Kump Lumber Company. She married Roger Hanson on December 27, 1956, at St. Dominic. After marriage they lived at Ft. Bragg while Roger was in the service. In 1958 they moved to Long Prairie and in 1964 to Rosemount. Mary worked over 30 years for Grief Brother’s Manufacturing until retiring in 1996. After retirement she spent much of her time helping to care for her mother. Mary and Roger have lived in Northfield since 2005.


Bernie Hughes funeral notice

Bernie Hughes, age 83 of rural Randolph, passed away Friday morning, April 18, 2008, at Abbott-Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 4 PM Tuesday, April 22, 2008, at the Church of St. Dominic in Northfield. Interment with military honors will be in Calvary Cemetery, Northfield. Visitation will be at the church beginning at 12 Noon until the time of the service.

Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law, Eva and George Damian of Eagan; his son and daughter-in-law, Pat and Angela Hughes of O’Fallon, Missouri; 11 grandchildren; and his half-brother, Donald Hughes of St. Paul.

Memorials are preferred to the Bernard Hughes Memorial Fund.

Survivors include her husband of 51 years, Roger; 3 children: Mary and husband Scott Lundquist of Burnsville, Dave and wife Pattie of Prior Lake, Ron and wife Liz of Webster; 6 grandchildren, 2 great-grandchildren; 5 brothers and their wives: John Hruza of Waverly, Iowa, George & Marlene Hruza of St. Paul, Joseph Hruza of Northfield, Tom Hruza of Melrose, Wisconsin, and Bob and Sharon Hruza of Northfield.

Bill Vesledahl

vesledahl, bill Wilhelm Vesledahl was born June 19, 1916, at home in Nerstrand, Minnesota, to Thomas and Nettie Vesledahl. Until recently, he lived his entire life in Nerstrand, where he was considered a good friend to all. At the age of 20 he began working at the Nerstrand Elevator. Bill left Nerstrand for a few years when he joined the US Army Air Force on October 14, 1942. While serving he became a flight engineer on a B-25 bomber, but did not serve overseas. Following his discharge on February 15, 1946, he returned to Nerstrand. He married Audrey Fremouw on February 15, 1954. Audrey had cancer and passed away in 1956. He married Hazel Dahms on February 18, 1963.
